Live Support Through Google Meet!

Hello and hope everyone is doing ok,

A notice has gone out from the school board that a new opportunity for support can now be available.

Google Meet (which is a live and interactive video conferencing app. much like "Zoom" which you might have heard about) has now been given allowance to be used for teachers to support individual students and/or small groups of students who may need the live interaction in order to reinforce their understanding of the topics we are learning about.

If you do feel that you may benefit from this live interaction at any point for extra support on the concepts we cover, please let me know and we can schedule a live Google meet at a convenient time.

At that point I can give you instructions on how we would coordinate this and how we would log on.

Any questions or comments please let me know.

Friday April 17th Online Learning Day

Hello,

As I will be taking a faith day on Friday, I thought that it would make sense to give an extra day for students to continue to work on the language from today's work...therefore no new work will be assigned.

This will also let those that just recently obtained access to technology the chance to catch up on the work they might have missed.

Please check the blog posts over the course of the last week to check what we have been doing if you do need to catch up.

Also please note about faith days I will be taking off Friday and Monday as well:

Due to a daily absence, I will not be maintaining office hours or engaging in direct teacher led instruction with students Friday April 17th and Monday April 20th.  The daily/weekly tasks and assignments will  be shared on our Google Classroom beforehand.  Students are encouraged to continue to work through these activities.  I will be resuming office hours and direct teacher led instruction again commencing on Tuesday April 21st.  Thank you.

Have a great day!

MUSIC Announcement. A Couple of fun links...and crazy hair day tomorrow.

MUSIC

For Music, you will be working on music theory through a website called, "Breezin' Thru Theory".
It is an interactive site with lessons, drills and games and can be done on any device.
Your assignments will be to complete the drills and once you complete a drill, Mr. Alexander will receive it and be able to track your progress.

Mr. Alexander has set up a google classroom for Grade 6 Music that details all the instructions about what your expectations are how to complete them.

The google classroom code is: ti5wvtm
You can now work on music!

Also,
I thought I'd attach these links for you, because I thought they might be fun to check out if you have any spare time.

The first is a YouTube link to the author of the series of Haunted Canada books.

The second is a link to a "Google Earth" game of Carmen San Diego.

Also, tomorrow is tomorrow is crazy hair day (but I thought everyday was crazy hair day these days....or maybe that's "bed head" day.....oh well!).

Enjoy!

Some Announcements

Just a few things to note as we move forward.

1.) In order to make sure that I can give the ample amount of support to all of the students, can I ask that when you are finished doing your school work for the day, can you send me a private message just saying that you are done working for the day.  As well, can you also let me know how you found the work manageable and if there was any challenges that you might have had.
You can do this by sending me an email through your student accounts.
Please do this EACH SCHOOL DAY regardless of whether you actually complete the assigned tasks for that day.

2.) Tomorrow (Friday) and Monday are holidays so there will be no work posted and office hours will not apply. We will resume our online learning on Tuesday.

3.) To establish a regular schedule, I will start with the following moving forward*:
Monday: Math and either Visual Art or Drama**
Tuesday: Science
Wednesday: Literacy
Thursday: Social Studies and Health
Friday: Math, or Language, or if there's something else that we might need to catch up on.**

*Notice that I have included Visual Art, Drama, and Health. The school board has now mandated that all curriculum areas will be covered.  Keep in mind that there will be opportunities where these subjects might be covered in the content of OTHER subjects as well (e.g. Math, Literacy, Science, etc.)

**As we have Monday and Friday designated as holidays, for JUST next week we will switch the schedule to:
Tuesday: Math and either Visual Art or Drama**
Wednesday: Science
Thursday: Literacy
Friday: Social Studies and Health

Congrats to a great first week of online learning everyone!
Looking forward to seeing what next week brings.

Mr. Vryonides.

A Few Updates to Note

In regards to student technology:
-Rick Hansen now has a list of all of our school’s requests for technology for student use and will be working to distribute this to families by administrators next week.

Office Hours:
-I am stating an "official" office Hour. This will be an hour of the day that I am certainly online and available to give feedback and answer emails, comments, questions, etc. That being said, I will be online at other points of the day, but count on me to be online during this office hour:

Monday to Friday: 10am - 11am.

Ongoing communication:
-The school board will continue to communicate with families through texts, twitter, the YRDSB website, Instagram and mass emails.

Thanks again,
Mr. Vryonides

From Mr. D

Mr. D had asked me to forward this on just in case parents/guardians had not received this.

April 7th Online Learning Day

It's Science today.

Welcome all Science students.

1.) First thing I'd like us to do for all my Math students is to leave a comment about how you found the online work yesterday. You can do this in the Math Google Classroom.
A.) If you were ok with it, or if you had any questions about the assigned work.
B.) If you had any other thoughts/challenges with the whole online learning experience so far.

2.) Then please make your way over to the Science Google Classroom for your video and task resources for the day. I've posted a Google Assignment (due April 10th). The video even might just have a special "cameo" appearance in it!

I've also created a comment thread in the Science Google classroom where I ask that all comments stay on that particular thread just so it's easier to located them all in one place.

Great first day experience yesterday.

Good luck today!

Mr. Vryonides.

Great Start Today!

I'd like to just say thanks for everyone doing their part to make this a successful first day of transitioning into online learning.

Just like our amazing class INSIDE the school, we have transferred our online environment into an inclusive and enriching environment where everyone was on-task, helpful to each other, and seeking support when necessary.

If I just had my white board with me right now, it would have been worth 2 signatures!
(is anyone keeping track?!)

Tune in tomorrow morning for our 2nd day.  We will be doing a Science lesson.

Thanks again,

Mr. Vryonides.

p.s. remember what I said at the beginning of the year...that change may be good, or change may be difficult, but change will always make you stronger.

April 5th Online Learning Day

Hello ladies and gentlemen and welcome "back" to school!

This is our first day of online learning and here is your tasks for today.

1.) For EVERYONE I have put an Inclusion Activity to launch our week. This can be located in the Social Studies Google Classroom.

2.) For our Math and Language students I have placed our Math task in the Math Google Classroom for today It is attached as a Google Assignment.

Remember that this is new territory for ALL of us and that we will grow and learn with this new experience together...it's ok for us to have some challenges and struggles along the way as we get used to this.

Please send me any questions and/or comments you have along the way and I will check in periodically throughout the day.

I hope this will be an enriching experience for everyone,

Good Luck!
Mr. Vryonides.

Important Update!!!

Hello again,

There have been some decisions made by the school board that has changed our plans and how we will begin our online learning. Changes were expected because as you know...this is the first time we have gone through this experience in education.

When last I wrote you, the plan was that:

-We will be using the Google classroom to access material and resources much like we have done up to this point now in the school year. THIS IS STILL THE CASE!

-We might have used online video Apps like "Go to Meeting."
A new update is that this will NOT be happening at the moment. There are certain obstacles that the school board would have to work out before we engage in this. This was a very recent (today) update to the plan.

-I was to have set "office hours" where it was to be dedicated times where you could send me questions, ask for support and feedback on the work we will be doing.
A new update is that you can still send me questions and ask for feedback however, there will be NO SET office hours dedicated to feedback. This is because there may be limitations of when you are able to use your devices during the day and if you don't have access during the specific office hours for whatever reason...then this would be a challenge. Instead I will be checking THROUGHOUT each school day and answering questions as they come in as often as I am able to. That way you don't have to worry about if you've "missed" the office hours.

This blog is STILL our "home base."
From here it will provide you information on which Google Classrooms you need to go to and it will give you any other information you will need on what we are doing and if anything changes.

Please keep checking in with the blog and expect our first lesson to be posted Monday morning.

We give our apologies for the changes, but we appreciate you being patient as this is the first time our school board (and the world of education) has ever experienced something like this.

The subjects we will continuing on will be Math, Language, Science, and Social Studies (for now) Expect that on Monday morning, we will be continuing our exploration into Fractions as we began this just before the March break. This means our first stop will be the Math Google classroom.
The aim is to have the material available on the classroom by 9:10am (as is when we would start on a normal school day),

Thanks!
Mr. Vryonides.

This blog is your "Home Base" for Online Learning

Hello one and all.

I have now made an attempt to contact your families via telephone regarding our current situation in education.
If I was unable to contact you over the phone, I followed up with an email.

The main messages were:
-We will be transitioning into online learning next week.
-To please read the two particular emails that were sent out to you regarding available resources and answering the technology survey (from the school board).

In addition to that, know that:

-We will be using the Google classroom to access material and resources much like we have done up to this point now in the school year.
-We might also use online video Apps like "Go to Meeting" where I can provide live lessons.
-I will have "office hours" where it will be dedicated times where you can send me questions, ask for support and feedback on the work we will be doing.

I'd like to stress that we will be using THIS blog as a "home base." From here it will provide you information on which Google Classrooms you need to go to, it will give you instructions on how to access Go To Meeting and other apps, and will give you any other information you will need on what we are doing and if anything changes.

I will do my best to make sure that this transition is as smooth and as stress-free as possible.

I'll give you more information as it becomes updated so please stay tuned and stay healthy!

Mr. Vryonides.
